What to expect from Icelandic
Nouns change form in four cases, so the same word can look different from line to line.
Nouns have three genders, and adjectives change to match them.

Tips for learning Icelandic with games
Note the full set of forms when you learn a new noun, not just one.
Read lines aloud, because Icelandic spelling follows clear rules once you learn them.
Start with a game you have already finished, so you can follow the story and focus on the language.
Begin with simple or children's games that repeat the same words. Long story games are much harder at first.
At first, choose games that let you read at your own pace. Timed dialogue and text that disappears are hard to follow.
Game translations are sometimes stiff or too literal, so check new phrases before you use them yourself.
If a game has no Icelandic voices, watch let's play videos or live streams in Icelandic for listening practice.
Games teach words better than grammar, so use them alongside a course or tutor.
If a game has Icelandic voices and you only read subtitles in your own language, switch the subtitles to Icelandic too.
If a game stays in English, check its settings, or right-click it in Steam and open Properties, General, Language.
To find more games, add Icelandic to your language preferences in the Steam store settings.
On consoles, some games only include a language in copies sold in that country, so check the version before you buy.
Some games without official support have fan translations. Quality varies, and our lists only cover official languages.
